About Kiel

Kiel’s history is inseparable tied to his harbor. There are so many cruise ships, giant cargo vessels and smaller pleasure craft boats maneuvering around just in the middle of a city.

The Christian-Albrechts-University, in adjacencies to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW), the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel as well as numerous other institutes and science institutions, is part of Kiel’s science center of the federal state Schleswig-Holstein. Kiel also offers a variety of cultural events by opera, theaters, in many museum and libraries as well as in the TV and radio station of Schleswig-Holstein (NDR).
Every year the S-H music festival is attracting millions of visitors to be part of concerts, hot spots of art or comedian events.
The Kiel Fjord is one of the most beautiful sailing area which hosted the Olympic Games, the Volvo Ocean Race 2002 and the “Kiel Week” (Kieler Woche). The “Kieler Woche” is the world’s largest sailing event and is the biggest summer festival in northern Europe with more than 1000 events around the city every year in June.
